A New York City organization is helping keep pet parents in need and their dogs together.

Dog owner Maria Ducasse started the East New York Dog Lovers in 2018 as a social group for dogcentric activities in Brooklyn, but it quickly morphed into a nonprofit pet care organization with more than 200 volunteers, helping pay for dog food and veterinary bills for those who couldn’t otherwise afford to keep their pets, or fostering for those who need to live in a shelter for a while.

Since its founding, East New York Dog Lovers has reunited at least 50 dogs with their people, and saved the life of at least one pit bull who couldn’t keep food down due to an internal injury.
